HOUSING DEVELOPMENT COMPOUNDS, HAUL ROAD AND PILING MAT

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT COMPOUNDS, HAUL ROAD AND PILING MAT
FAVERSHAM, KENT

The background

Landmark, working with Bovis Homes, required the construction of a compound, haul road, material store and piling mat for their development in Faversham, Kent. Landmark required efficient and safe movement on site regardless of weather conditions, reduced cost as compared to traditional stone techniques, cost certainty and minimising the disruption to the local community caused by wagon movements importing stone to build the haul roads and compounds.

Geobind specified their unique Armoured Layer Surfacing design for the haul road and material store construction to provide a maintenance free design for the heavily trafficked areas. Overall 3,100m2 of in situ subsoil was treated with 2,378m2 being Armoured. The piling mat was designed in-house by the Geobind temporary works team to achieve a load bearing of 270kn/m2.

The challenge

Programme speed was crucial for Landmark. Geobind overcame inclement (very wet) weather and tight access to the site, completing all works in 4 days, 3 weeks shorter than the traditional stone construction previously programmed by Landmark.

The result

  • Vastly reduced programme time from 4 weeks to 4 days allowing the contractor to move forward with key elements of the project
  • Reduction of 2,170 tonnes of imported stone
  • No material was taken off-site, a reduction in 3,100 tonnes of muckaway
  • Negation of 275 heavy tipper vehicle movements
  • 300%+ CBR on Armoured Layer Surfaced areas, 50%+ CBR on Standard Layer areas
  • 88% reduction in wagon movements 88% 88%
  • 100% reduction in export disposal 100% 100%
